Professor NFAK - The Story Of NFAK's Stay At University Of Washington

University Of Washington invites Celebrity Visiting Artists every year for it’s  Ethnomusicology Program. In 1992-93 they took a chance to Invite NFAK, hoping he wont turn up. To their surprise , NFAK happily agreed (eventually) … why hadn’t he … he was going to get great chance to spread his music to a completely new audience and ample resource for his musical-cross blendings.. .. The program was a huge success as not just students but even faculty members and artists from different universities as well as different parts of USA turned up for the program…the fact that his students became one of the most Hardcore NFAK fans ever was not at all surprising… He also gave one of his most memorable performances ever at Meany(University Theater) after huge request by students . Koi Bole Ram Ram (Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan for Universal Brotherhood & Tolerance) with english translations

The date was 31st December 1989, and at Ramgarhia Sabha Gurdwara(A Sikh Temple) Slough UK , a Musilm was singing “Koi bole Ram Ram (A Hindu God) “. For people present, there were no separate religions  “Allah was Ram” & “Ram was the Guru”. By performing this song, NFAK proved that “music has no Religion” & “Religion could never bound NFAK”.  This pious though by NFAK truly justifies the following tribute by a fan ( ‘Rishi R Jha’).

Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, when he sings, the GEETA, the KORAN, the BIBLE,the Sri Guru Garanth Sahib Ji , all are turned into music…a harmony with the existence …the godliness of the Universe can be felt.

So what follows is the English subtitled video & “Lyrics & Translations” of song “Koi Bole Ram Ram”, and the complete performance of NFAK in Gurudwara ( I know you must have seen it). Lets believe in Each Others Religions, beliefs & Gods.. ..

‘Velvet Fire’ - the Legacy of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan by Dinuk Wijeratne

Dinuk Wijeratne NFAKDinuk Wijeratne revisits Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s legacy from a Musician’s  & student’s point of view. He writes

What I find personally instructive and inspiring is the notion that Nusrat endorsed any collaboration in which the essence of the traditional material was preserved. Like a flower in a foreign garden, our perception of the purity of a single entity is changed, perhaps even enhanced, provided that it continues to bloom untouched in a different environment to what it is used to. Nusrat’s renditions of Qawwali were able to do so regardless of their immediate contexts. Click Here to Read Full Article
